The origins of jasmine green tea can be traced back to the Song Dynasty, when literati and scholars began combining the fragrance of jasmine flowers with green tea, pioneering the art of floral tea blending. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, the production techniques had become increasingly refined, with the processing methods from Fujian and Jiangsu provinces being particularly renowned. This ingenious fusion of floral and tea aromas not only became a hallmark of traditional Chinese floral tea but also spread far and wide along the Silk Road and through cultural exchanges, allowing the fragrant blend of jasmine and green tea to endure for over a thousand years.

The essence of traditional jasmine green tea lies in the “scenting” process: after selecting fresh, tender green tea leaves to make rough tea, they are layered alternately with half-open jasmine flowers picked on the same day. The tea leaves’ absorptive properties allow the floral fragrance to naturally permeate the tea. This process is repeated multiple times, with each scenting step requiring precise control of temperature, humidity, and time to ensure that the tea and flower aromas blend harmoniously without overpowering each other. Finally, the petals are sifted out, leaving behind tea leaves saturated with fragrance. When brewed, the tea offers the refreshing aftertaste of green tea combined with the rich, lingering aroma of jasmine.
