The creation of osmanthus oolong tea stems from the evolution of traditional Chinese floral tea blending techniques, with its history traceable back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. At that time, tea masters in Fujian, Guangdong, and other regions discovered that the rich, mellow broth of oolong tea harmonized exceptionally well with the delicate sweetness of osmanthus blossoms. They carefully blended autumn-blooming osmanthus flowers with oolong tea leaves, giving rise to this distinctive beverage that seamlessly blends the aromas of tea and flowers. It serves as both a refined offering on the desks of literati and scholars and a warm, comforting beverage for the autumn season among the common people. Over time, it has become a gentle, autumn-hued presence on the tea table.

The production of traditional osmanthus oolong tea emphasizes the balance between “infusing fragrance” and “preserving flavor”: first, oolong tea leaves with moderate fermentation are selected, then fresh osmanthus petals (either golden or silver osmanthus) are added. The tea leaves are layered to allow them to naturally absorb the floral aroma. The infusion process must avoid high temperatures that could damage the fragrance, typically repeated 2-3 times to ensure the floral aroma is fully developed. Afterward, excess petals are sifted out, and the oolong tea leaves, now fully infused with osmanthus fragrance, are dried and shaped. The resulting tea, when brewed, combines the rock-like floral aroma and lingering sweetness of oolong tea with the delicate, rich sweetness of osmanthus, creating a harmonious and layered flavor profile.
